Southern Highlands, NSW, July 23 2020.
Last night, Wingecarribee Shire Council resolved to establish a Climate Change Advisory Panel to help guide the local community in pursuit of net-zero CO2 emissions. The resolution also contained provisions to consider funding implications of the recently declared ‘Climate Emergency’.
WinZero, formed to inspire and lead the Wingecarribee community as a whole to be net zero emissions by 2050 (or before), will have an opportunity to present to council in relation to its plans to reduce emissions, and outline developing projects in areas such as energy, waste, regenerative landscapes, water and transport. WinZero spokesperson, Gaye White, said “We congratulate council for making a positive step to improve the local environment, this move will help to promote resilience, and a sustainable, enduring future for all our local communities.”
The WinZero AGM is to be held on 3 August when a new committee will be elected and the vision for WinZero’s mission and planned actions will be discussed. “Following the Climate March earlier this year, an enthusiastic agglomeration of environmental groups has been working hard to refine plans aligned to emissions reduction and environmental improvement, I commend our website and Facebook page to readers to find out more – and join us on this journey.” said Gaye.
Chair of the Wingecarribee Environment and Sustainability Committee, Larry Whipper, said: “The unanimous support that my Notice of Motion received from Councillors is very encouraging indeed. I believe this shows that we as an elected body have acknowledged that climate change is real, and that we are prepared to take our inter-generational responsibilities seriously”.
“After years of environmental advocacy, it is very gratifying to receive such an endorsement from my fellow Councillors in tackling the challenges before us. We will be calling for Expressions of interest to join the Climate Change Advisory Panel soon and, in the meantime, I welcome the interest and encouragement of WinZero in helping me raise awareness regarding this critical issue”.
